While the seal below the title (“Hatsu yuki“) in the lower left corner appears to be that of an artist, it reads “Mutsuki“, which is the first lunar month. Other copies of this print have been found grouped with another composition with a seal which can be read “Kisaragi“, the second lunar month, it appears that an unknown publisher issued a group of prints with themes corresponding to the months of the year.

A stunning bijin-ga from the shin-hanga movement; with karazuri (blind printing) of the snow in the foreground, delicate carving and beautiful bokashi to create depth and ripples in the woman’s kimono.

The Woodblock Print

With the image measuring roughly 14 3/4″ by 6 1/2″ or mitsugiri-ban-sized, this woodblock print is in very fine to excellent condition with lovely color and detail. Clean and intact margins, a mostly-clean verso with some residue in the top corners from being tipped. Two very tiny pinpoints of foxing.

The Artist

Unknown artist, but based on the paper, quality of printing, and stylistic nuances, our guess is Hodo Nishimura or Shotei (based on this print).
