About the Artist
Osamu Sugiyama was born in Tokyo in 1946 and studied at the Yoshida Hanga Academy – an institution established by the Yoshida family to teach and encourage the art of Japanese woodblock printmaking. His teacher was Toshi Yoshida, the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida. Osamu Sugiyma is a mokuhanga artist; he not only designs his prints himself, but does also the carving and printing. Woodblock prints by Osamu are made by hand in the old traditional way using traditional carving and printing tools.
Osamu Sugiyama had at least two things in common with his teacher Toshi Yoshida: the gift of traditional woodblock printmaking and the passion for mountain hiking and climbing. The artist has conquered famous mountains in Japan, Europe and Nepal in summer and in winter, and many of his prints are focused on this subject matter.
