Ôkura Magobei

Aiban (9″x13″)

Birds / Beasts, Plants & Flowers

Published in 1880, this aiban-sized woodblock is part of the collection “Rinsai’s Bird and Flowers”.

The Woodblock Print

This woodblock print is in very good condition for its age and format; good color, clean verso, attached album backing and intact margins. Most of these prints were distributed folded in an album, so the centerfold crease is standard. There is a small amount of separation at the top and bottom of the crease line, but it does not extend into the printed image itself.

About the Artist

Rinsai Utsushi was a woodblock print artist active between 1869-1890 and focused almost entirely in kacho-e or bird-and-flower pictures. The woodblocks he created are dynamic, unique in their combinations of traditional landscapes, treatment, and decorative elements. His prints were mostly released as collections or volumes, many with an album backing of a second sheet (not backed, but two sheets connected as a back).
