People are hurrying to get a shelter from a sudden shower with high winds; several cherry trees in full bloom stand on the background.

The Woodblock Print

This oban-sized woodblock print by Shoda Koho is in very good condition; strong colors, fully intact paper and margins, delicate details. Printed on a darker paper. There is residue on the verso from where it was tacked at the corners, and a little wrinkling in the upper left margin area. A publisher sticker "355" covers the "Made in Japan" stamp on the verso.

Shoda Koho (ca. 1871-1946) was a Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature.
