This woodblock is a deluxe edition copy of the Japanese Meiji-period print by Torii Kiyotada VII, also known as Tadakiyo, (1875-1941) depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX portraying Fudo Myoo from the series “The Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays” published by Hasegawa in 1896. The series title extends across the top of the image. The artist’s Tadakiyo signature and red jar seal are at the lower left. The upper right holds the Ichikawa family mimasu (three nested squares) crest with the name of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro (9th) below it. To the right of the actor’s name is the description of the image: “Narita-yama Fudo Myoo.”

Deluxe edition with extensive gauffrage in very good overall condition. Full margins, good paper with only a minor discoloration in the top margin. Clean verso.

About the Artist

Kiyotada Torii IV (1875-1941) was an adopted son of the famous Torii family, sometimes referred to as Torii VII. He is best known to collectors of Japanese prints for a series of actor prints he created titled Kabuki Juhachiban.
