This series is a ukiyo-e print series that introduces an origin of the hallowed ground (reijo) of each area and Kannon’s miracles, depicting the scenery of famous places and heritages. Products of Hiroshige Utagawa II, Toyokuni Utagawa III, and Kunisada Utagawa, publication beginning in 1858.  The landscapes in the upper inset were made by Hiroshige. The lower part of the print features large figures associated with each station by Kunisada I (Toyokuni III).

This woodblock is “Jôsen-ji at Mount Iwamoto“, No. 3 of the Chichibu Pilgrimage Route (Chichibu junrei sanban Iwamotosan Jôsen-ji), from the series Miracles of Kannon (Kannon reigenki)

A samurai carries a little child on his back through a mountain torrent, watched by a travelling woman sitting on the river bank and smoking a pipe. Above a landscape view with a temple, designed like a framed ex-voto picture (hôgaku).

The Woodblock Print

This woodblock is in very good condition, especially considering the age. Strong color, even toning, mild discoloration to the paper commensurate with age. Old adherents on the verso that are slightly visible from the front on the right side of the print.
