Bakufu, Ohno
Ohno Bakufu was born in 1888 in Tokyo (died 1976) and worked primarily as a painter. He is best known for several series of fish/sea creature prints which were created based on his paintings by professional carvers and printers and published by Kyoto Hanga-In.
While most print artists who were active during the first half of the twentieth century can casually be grouped to one of the two art movements of the period – the shin hanga or the sosaku hanga “camp” of woodblock printmakers, not so with Ohno Bakufu, as his style does not neatly fit into either of these two groups.
